the difficulty i found, which led to me replacing the bung, was that when the engine was being revvedi had to pour into the funnel very quickly and it tipped out the header tank at the same rate.

when i get home tonight i'll do the seesaw thing again for a while and see it any more bubbles came out.

agree with haydn header cap should be of all the time .

try my hose pipe method its a variation on the see saw you can control the flow of water by raisung the pipe to stop the syphonong effect when you see the water level drop in the header tank , wearing gloves cover end of hose why you top up the header just carry on doing this until your certain the stat is open otherwise your wasting your time . when you come to putting bung back in i folded the last inch of the pipe to stop the flow then pushed it in.

Yes thats the bit I found stressful too. Next time I intend to have my son standing by the header tank with strict orders to top it up from a jug so I don't have to rush to and fro. I found it unrelaxing as a one man job.

All seems well again. Managed a 1hr drive to the coast yesterday and an hour in stop start driving country roads in the sunshine. The heaters were fine and the temp guage is steady.

Went diving today, such a joy to be able to get changed afterwards in the van.

Thanks for all the help with this. Cant wait for the next paycheck to get a coolant alarm so that i dont have to check it every time i leave the house.
