Can it happen again??

Post by Miles69 » Sat Apr 25, 2009 9:07 am

Last October our bongo head went so we had it replaced along with water pump and thermostat. The garage traced the fault to a blocked radiator so we had that rodded and pressure tested. What else can cause gas/air to get into the coolant system? Faulty turbo?

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Haydn & more knowledgeable members will be along soon & from your post it sounds like your garage is well meaning in waving the labour cost.. However do they know the cooling system on the Bongo??
Do you have any warning system put in place? The temperature needle wont move until it's way to late, unless you have something like a Mason alarm fitted to increase the sensitivity.

There have been problems with cheaper replacement heads going, again if this is the case & it was the garage that sourced the head, maybe an arrangement on the price can be accomplished on that part too?

Good luck!

There have been a lot of problems with the cheaper head gaskets, I believe the mazda originals are the best bet. Also, was the head trued/blocked to ensure it is completely flat? As Jaylee says, a low coolant alarm &/or a mason alarm should have warned you.

I wonder if the garage fitted the new head and used the "old" head bolts......does that garage do a lot of Bongos? It seems you are now "tied to that garage" pity.
As Kirsty says ...there are heads and "heads"
More questions than answers I'm afraid.

Yes, its a bongo specialist, we did everything they recommended ...

They fitted new head gasket set and head bolts, they say that have never had a problem with the heads before. Its seems they're at a loss as to why its happened again after fitting new water pump, thermostat and having the rad sorted out.

I can't complain about the service as they've been very good so far. Can you still get Mazda OE gaskets? If so where can i buy them?

Also, maybe take out the rear heater matrix and check that for a blockage too, if the front rad was blocked theres also the chance the rear heater matrix is blocked as well.
