Funnny stuff with mi leisure battery!

Post by kinghassan » Tue Apr 21, 2009 8:17 pm

hello all,
i'm having a bit of bother with my leisure battery:

a few weeks ago i noticed the voltmeter was in the red and thought that the battery must be dead despite me driving on a regular basis.

then all of a sudden it shot back up to green. s i thought great its sorted itself as things do....

now it is playing up again and going up and down when the engine is off it goes staright into the red and when its on goes back up to green immidiately....

maybe the batteries dead or is there a loose connection????

anyone experienced the same thing?
cheers

I would be tempted to get the leisure battery tested using a different meter.
Do you know how old it is..?

Ensure all of the connections are done up tightly.

It sounds like you could have a faulty leisure battery. It could be showing as charged or 'green' with the engine running due to the split charging sytem increasing voltage to the battery as it attempts to charge. But if there is a dead cell in the battery then it would be unable to hold this charge and so shows as flat or 'red'. It wouldn't be a bad idea to start by getting it checked to at least elliminate the possibility. Hope this helps.

Before you spend a penny take your battery round to the local battery place or auto electricians, they will usually test it for you for free. I've had three of my batteries tested and it has cost me nowt, only one of them was faulty.

Could it be that the meter lead to the leisure battery is broken? It'll read zero with the engine off, and, if a split charger is on the system, could read "full" when the engine charge ciruit is working (engine running).
