The stuff that came out was a murky green colour.

That's a very good question that has been the subject of much discussion - far too much to post here.
Do a search on "coolant" and much of it should turn up - good reading, I hope you a week or so to spare.
The important points are.
Have some - DO NOT use plain water - ever.
Make sure it is a good brand - and make sure you have enough for topping up in future.
Keep a note of what type it is for future reference in case you need to get some more - as some will mix and some won't.
