My Bongo is 12 yrs old but has only done 37000 mls. Do I need to change the timing belt? What is this belt made of ( fibre or metal)?

If in any doubt, you should change it - better safe than sorry :D

If it's never been changed or you don't know when it was last changed...I would like most others change it to be safe, a broken one can cause a lot of damage...Haveing said that I have never heard of a cambelt failing on a Bongo.

I think Dandywarhol has said much the same, as the cambelt on a Bongo only drives the camshaft from the injector pump - the pump itself is driven by gears from the crank.

All that means that the Bongo cambelt has a relatively easy life.

But as with all things rubber, age is probably more important than amount of use and I would think 11y.o. is plenty old enough for a rubber belt - just think what 11y.o. tyres would be like. :?
