CD/radio/MP3, need help and advice.

Post by Daniel » Mon Apr 13, 2009 7:26 pm

Hi all. I want to change the standard tape/radio that came with my Bongo. Currently it has band expander so i can pick up UK radio but the rear speakers do not work. I wanted to change it for this model from Halfords:

http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stor ... =ClickInfo

The web site states that it fits to 95% of cars and when you buy it to pick your make and model from the drop down menu to ensure they can fit the radio in store. Obviously the Bongo isn’t in the list so will it fit and can Halfords do it? Anyone with any experience or advice?
Cheers

Easiest way is to ask at Halfords -they will know what is required. I have fitted a number of various radios to Bongos and all were easy to do. You will probably just require a mazda to ISO connector and the head unit will just plug in. The hole in the dash is a standard size so shouldnt be any problems there. As regards the speakers at the rear, have you checked to see that there are speakers there and that the wiring is installed? Some bongos dont have speakers already installed. Good luck.

When i got mine i used the JVC out of my old vehicle & got a Mazda ISO connector for the JVC with no problems fitting.. Its easy if you remove the glove box to access the back!

I was lucky in the respect that although i had no rear speakers, the factory wiring loom was there, (Though this is not always the case with all Bongo's) just look for a two wire connector block behind the grill attached to the back of the frame that should house the factory speakers if they where fitted..

While you are at Halfords ask about there 'rip speed' CD/ DVD players, they are doing some good deals at the moment ( credit crunch and all that!)
I have just fitted one, best bit of kit I've fitted for a while
The Mazda standard ISO connectors are all you need to fit a CD/ DVD/MP3 etc player

That reminds me I must put the Kenwood CD in the swap section

Good luck

While trying to sort out my front fan control I pulled out the fuse for the radio as I was checking all the fuses. The radio went off and when I put the fuse back in the radio came back on but it didn’t recognise the band expander anymore. So I was stuck with classic FM only!
Sod it, went out and bought a new Sony head unit £88 reduced from £170 from Halfords. Very nice kit with AUX input, usb input to play MP3’s direct from a usb stick and audio outs on the back to quickly and easily link up the rear speakers when I get them.
Halfords did have the Bongo on their system under “Vans” and “Grey imports” but it said they had no connectors for it. I had the old radio with me and the regular universal Mazda fitting adaptor worked fine (£15ish).
Unit took 2 mins to fit and is working great! To get the old one out I used 4 pop rivets. The thin ends slip into the holes in each corner of the radio housing. They activate the release so it pops out of the dash board.
Very easy and quick.
