V6 odour problem revisited

Hi everyone, with ref: to my odour problem, something i've also noticed is that when the van is at normal temperature and idiling the smell appears,now when reversing the smell is even worse, guys i'm scratching my head and holding my nose Any thoughts on this. Cheers

is it a sweet smell? i had this and tried allsorts to get rid of the smell on my old bongo, but to no avail, i did get rid of it for while by getting some engine degreaser and spary the engine and gearbox and rinsing down but it came back, so put it down to the oil around the egr pipe burning off when the engine got hot.

or do you mean its there when you turn the aircon/heater on?, if so a few peeps have got rid of it by spaying some odour killer such as oust or febreeze directly into the air intake and let the fans do the work, have you had the aircon regassed lately?, may need a good clean and top up

Hi, its a rubber/oily smell like been burning its not noticable when driving only when idiling and reversing. thanks

have you checked or changed the belts?, could be slipping or rubbing and causing friction, this you would only notice on idling as your not in motion which whilst driving will have air racing past it so thats why you cant smell it whilst driving? also when your reversing you going slow so you will smell it then.

may be worth checking them, other than that havent a clue unless you have a dodgy tyre

Hi,

Check your power steering reservoir, it's under the drivers seat. I'd filled mine up a while back, apparantly it should only be half full, mine had overflowed and I think that was causing the smell as it was dripping onto the engine.

Check for oil on the engine i still have a leak but not what first thought much easier fix on mine oil gathers in the lip around the sump and drips on the flexi pipe around the back of the engine only smell it when hot in traffic or on idle after a whoopin also depends on what hill im parked on aswell, next time get out and get your nose closer to the smell, i could actually see it smoking on the flexi one day that how i found mine

Hi i dropped the power steering fluid level but unfortunatley the smell continues ,when the rain passes im going to try to get underneath and take a look, fingers crossed i'll find it thanx everyone

Worth getting it checked out if you can.

There are many causes, leaking coolant could well be one of them and this does tie in.

My smell has come back (I think) and does smell of oil so I'll be taking another look when I get time. Hoping I imagined it earlier but it's worth checking out. Annoying but fixable I'm hoping.

Keep us posted, be good to get to the bottom of it.

hi dudes, i took our bongo back to the LPG garage and they tightened all the hose clips and so far have not lost any more coolant,hope this the last of it but fitting a low coolant alarm anyway,cheers everyone

Hi, back to the smell,would it be an autogear box problem like the clutch plates as this will be a nightmare for me as ive just had the bongo 3 weeks or just something simple any ideas!

I think if it were the clutch plates slipping in the gearbox you would notice in how it drives etc. No auto expert but I would think there would be other symptoms.

There are many on here that have said their engine smells, so the most likely thing is a fluid leak somewhere onto a hot surface.

I saw mine from under a ramp the other day and there wasn't anything obvious other than the power steering fluid so I'm hoping it's that and that a better clean up will sort it out. I'm not using any engine oil or coolant, however I'm sure only a tiny amount would cause a smell.

Have a good check around with a decent torch from many angles and see if you can find anything. That is my plan, tackle the simple sutff only.

As it gets worse when you reverse, are you sure it's not just the exhaust gases?
