sounds like i might need to replace my turbo, could anyone suggest where to get one or wether thet can be reconditioned

What makes you think the turbo needs replacing?

you cant recondition them, ours went 2 1/2 years ago and i tried many places to try to repair it but to be honest it was gonna be cheaper to fly to japan and pick a new one up.
i got a secondhand one from bell hill garage. they are very easy to replace. as kirsty says what symptoms have you got that lead you to the conclusion of the turbo.

watch out that the turbo numbers match up cause the one on the ford ranger isnt the same. lower boost on it.
have you taken the exhaust manifold off and looked in the ports to see if they are oily.
does it smoke, is it when your on tick over, booting it or when you drop revs back. thats if its smoking.

when ours went i ran the engine minus the manifold so i could see how the engine was running, our exhaust ports were clear barring a little leak from the valve stem oil seal on pot 1. how much oil are you loosing and what grade of oil do you put in it.

white smoke out of exhaust, done sniffer test for head gasket, came back negative, mechanic is going to have the turbo tested.

I get the white smoke thing too Niel, 'specially when booting it up hill.

It also swallows about a litre of oil every 1500 miles or so.

Similar symptoms?

sounds like ours as well until we had the formula 1 blow out on the m1. either of you loosing coolant steadily.
the turbo is oil and water cooled. we had the problem with the coolant pipes on the 4 way union. disconnected the coolant pipes and blocked them off. the turbo behaved with no loss or smoke until the oil seal packed up after two weeks, then that was that and we had to get another.

just read your latest post. i suggest that you disconect the two coolant pipes and block the with a bolt and jubilee clip. just try that first, that may help you with identifying the turbo at fault but dont leave em on too long.

I'm more than happy to stand corrected Mike but i read on here recently that the turbo is built in such a way that it has no oil seals as such - possibly a post from Dandy . . . . :?:

there must have been something that caused ours to pack up after the water cooling part went, it did give out lots of smoke, if there wasnt water running into it then it must have been oil getting through. we were lucky in one respect cause if the engine had started burning this oil that would have been the end of the engine period

Thanks for info, its been off road for 3 months now and i just want it back on road. 99 quid sounds a fair price for second hand turbo

Surely if you disconnect the coolant pipes, the turbo is going to cook itself? I suppose it's not an issue if the turbo is fubar anyway, but if you are doing it to check if the turbo is the problem, you could be creating a problem where there wasn't one I'd have thought.

Correct MM - no rubber oil seals -
