Checking gearbox and fluid

Post by Farm Boy » Wed Apr 01, 2009 4:21 pm

Hello all
Just a quick question as a newish Freda owner - should I be checking the gearbox (auto) with the engine running?

When I top up with fluid should I be using ATF fluid or something else?

Thanks for your help.

and welcome.....The answer is yes to both questions...In fact some check it with the trans in D and a foot on the brake.
Not me though.

You should run it until the oil is warm, then check it with the engine running and the gearbox in D - chock the wheels if your handbrake isn't very good.
You need Dexron 3 grade ATF.

Hi Farm Boy,
Check your ATF fluid level with the engine running and with the gear selector in "P".
To top up use Dexron 2 or 3.

I always check mine after at least a 20 minute run, both brakes on, range slowly thorugh all the gears & check the level in D.
I wouldn't use anything less than Dexron 3.

Checking in "D" means the eevs are lower and there's less splash making the reading more accurate
