V6 Petrol, think I found out what the burning smell was

Post by apole » Sun Mar 29, 2009 5:49 pm

Hi,

Had Fred at Discount give my bongo a look over last week.

Anyway he kindly replaced all the pads for me, they were quite down so whilst it was there ....

As to the burning smell I've been suffering from for a while, I think Fred found the cause.

On removing the lower engine tray we found traces of oil on the bottom of the engine. I was thinking expense of the known oil seals that can go on the V6, however on closer inspection it was found that the power steering fluid reservoir had overflowed. Reason, well my fault. A while back I saw it looked low so I topped it up. I didn't realise it shouldn't go near the top, but more like halfway. Some was drained out and the mess cleaned up, hoping that is the cause of the mystery smell.

Fred also removed and cleaned the MAF sensor, he noticed an immediate improvement in how the car ticked over, time will tell if it is any different, but it was quite dirty so hopefully things will be better.

As usual, top marks for service and helpfulness to Fred, he's a star and I'm glad he's local to me.

Looking forward to using the bongo as much as I can now this year.

Just been out to buy some reversing lights and more cables etc, got plans to rewire rear ciggy lighter with thicker cable, make is possible to have parking sensors on when sleeping in car at night (cheap way to get a bit of extra security), and make it possible to turn on the rear interior light from the drivers seat, often need to see something in the back and can't see cos it's dark....

Anyway, rambing over, just thought I'd share the likely reason for that awful smell :o
