CV JOINT

Post by wazzie » Fri Mar 27, 2009 4:31 pm

I just picked up ma wee bongo from the Council run MOT service and it failed...
Good news is i only need to replce both front constant velocity joint gaiter splits. My question is , after replacing these will it stop the clunking noise when i steer right or do i need to replace the entire CV joint, all very confusing...
I would really appriciate a heads up on this one before i get her fixed, saving me cash on replacing the rubber thingy if i need to buy the Joints.

Cheers!

If you're getting a knocking noise when turning right, the chances are that your nearside CV joint in knackered. As both boots have split, both joints are probably on borrowed time - it doesn't take much muck to get in to wreck the bearings.

Thanks for the info, so im better off returning the gaiter thingies and buying the cv joints? Cheers, i would have thought the cv joints as a whole would have failed the MOT and not just the gaiter? Any thought on that m8?

nice 1....

As far as I can remember, there's no test in the MOT that will show faulty CV joints (unless they're actually falling apart  ) - which is why they fail on split boots. I'd replace both and know you've got several years use ahead of you :D

..........and they're probably cheap Chinese shite!
Maybe best go down the Bongobits/Club/etc. route - only a few quid more but at least you'll have a comeback if they knacker up. :?
