Hellooo, thank you all so much for all our help and tips, greatly appreciated. We managed to borrow another glow plug rail from a fellow bongonaught and hurrrray!!!!!! it works fine. So first thing tomorrow we will be ordering a new part.

If you can't start it cold then how are you going to start it scarlet......... :?

A cold indirect injection engine will have a real difficulty statring - even in summer, so glowplugs are essential.
Although the glowplug warning lamp goes out after a few seconds, the Bongo plugs stay on for 15 seconds with just the "ignition" on, otherwise when the engine is started the timer relay can keep them on for several MINUTES depending on the ambient temperature.

Excellent. Did I read on here something about the glowplug rail shorting out on glowplugs if incorrect length glowplugs were fitted. I'm not suggesting it has anything at all to do with this problem, but I never read on here before of a faulty glowplug rail. I assumed it was just a metal strip that made sure they are received electric power, but I'm no techie and have never fiddled with mine :shock:

I reckon they probably meant glow plug relay Mike.

No matter how painful it is, i have to agree with dandy here :P (just joshing luv)

Ultra efficient common rail fuelled diesels can start cold without the aid of a pre-warmed combustion chamber,but an indirect injection old lump as fitted to the bongo just won't start cold without the help of the glowplugs. The compressed fuel vapour heats as it's compressed, but can't achieve flashpoint temperature inside the dense cold walls of the combustion chamber without help from the warm air generated via the glowplugs. Notice how difficult it is to start a stone cold engine with just one lazy plug?
