bongo turning but not starting - any ideas

Post by bennett » Thu Mar 19, 2009 11:10 pm

I'm pretty sure not glow plugs any ideas? Bongo is blocking my wife's car in on drive, so no car at all!!!!! It turns but does not start.

Thanks Bennett

Why are you sure it's not glow plugs? Check they're getting voltage when ignition is turned, could be the relay (o/s inner wing behind battery) or fusible link gone. Is the fuel shut off solenoid on the fuel pump opening ok?
Is fuel getting through? could be the pick up is blocked or drawing in air, blocked filter or banjo filter?
You can't polish a turd - but you can roll it in glitter.

cheers, will let you know how I get on tomorrow. I have a sneaky feeling could be the stop solenoid.

I've taken to parking mine on the front lawn so as I can get the other car out of the garage if the Bongo should fail to start. Saves moving it if I want the car, too.

Use a multimeter set on dc voltage with a probe on the rail & a probe on any earth point on the body/chassis etc, or use a bulb & a couple of bits of wire, turn the ignition & it should read 12v/light the bulb.

Funny enough, my usual garage have a bongo in at the moment -stating problems and shouldnt be glow plugs due to A: not cold at the moment, B: 4 new glow plugs. He tested the plugs - all dead - new ones in....started first time.
Lack of starting I would always suspect glow plugs first.

Not the rarest thing that new parts are faulty, had it with an altenator once. Really throws you of the scent.

Sounds like the fusible link may have gone, quick check through this lot http://www.igmaynard.co.uk/bongo/forum/ ... mit=Search , should tell you what you need.
May be worth adding you location into your profile by clicking on user control panel top right, then we can see were you are & some local assistance may be forthcoming.

Hi a good diesel should start with out the glowplugs as they only warm up the air in the bores and you only realy benifit from this when its cold.Have you got 12v going to the glowplugs if you have a pre 2001 i think its fuse 18 on the internal fuse block i think it's a 10amp fuse. The relay only operates for a few seconds only when you turn the ignition on so it will take two people to test enless you remove the relay and make up some lead to test it with.Have you got 12v going to the stop solinoid hope this helps.
cheers
