Rust Killer

Post by apole » Tue Mar 10, 2009 11:05 am

Hi guys,

I have a tiny amount of rust starting on a couple of seams by the bonnet at the very edges.

I plan to remove this neatly with a dremmel and then treat with some rust remover/killer, before priming and touching in carefully.

Does anyone have an opinion as to the best rust remover/killer?

As I said I'll endevour to remove most/all of the rust anyway as I feel this is the best way and it's very light surface rust.

Frost do some neat products for cars and restoration.

Thanks

I've never actually found a good rust treatment :( Jenolite and Kurust are OK.
Hydrochloric Acid will dissolve the rust completely, but all traces must be washed off and the area dried and primed immediately afterwards - easy on a flat surface, but virtually impossible on some body parts.

Hydrochloric Acid will dissolve the rust completely,
Surely you refer to Orthophosphoric acid John? Used in most proprietry products and also in alloy wheel cleaners. Eats the rust down to the metal so you need to wash it off after 10 minutes or it will carry on right through the metal.

No Ian - I mean Hydrochloric (got a bottle in my shed)
Sounds very similar though. The Hydrochloric acid converts the oxide into a chloride, which is water soluble. Trouble is that, as you say with the other acid, the metal is stripped to the "bone" and will corrode the instant that it is exposed to damp and oxygen. I treated an old chrome bumper and was very impressed, until I looked at it again the next morning - it was covered in light rust  However, given the right conditions, I think it's the only way to "kill" rust before painting.

If you do use hydrochloric don't breathe the fumes.
Take a torch, toilet roll, and tea bags.

Very true - I forgot to mention that. I've actually diluted mine now, so that it doesn't smoke when you undo the bottle, but it's still pretty fumy when killing rust.
