Bizarre Oil Leak

HI Guys,

Thanks for the replies on the Start-Inhibit at the end of Jan. I've been battling another issue that prevented the engine running. I will explain.
I had a very large oil leak that appeared to be coming from the head-bolt nearest the oil feed from block to the head. Like an idiot I took off the head and replaced the o-ring on the dowl in the block. No change. Looked closer at the old head and realised that there was a drilling running horizontally at 45 degrees which should have an allen-headed grub-screw. When the exhaust is on, the end of this drilling is covered by the gasket. Started taking exhaust & turbo off again, then changed my mind (came to my senses more like!!) and drilled a hole in the gasket. Fitted the old grub-screw and no oil leak. Hurrah!!!
Hope that this will be a suitable lesson to other Bongo-heros that if you buy a bare head, you need to transfer ALL the parts or you will be a very unhappy chappy!
I'll post again when I get it fired up.
PS Is there any easy way to bleed the fuel through or do you just need to give the starter a thorough workout? On all the other diesels that I have fiddled with in the past, there has been a lift-pump and bleed screws. Not obviously on the Mazda setup.

There is a push button type lift pump on the top of my fuel filter holder...I always fill my filters before screwing on....a good cranking of the engine should draw fuel through in a few seconds.

Blimey (and welcome) fitzbongo. I'm impressed. Wish I could tackle jobs like that! On the fuel thing I'm no expert but most Bongos are self priming although some (if the workshop manual is to be believed) are not. But I've heard it said that if the pump system becomes truly dry (as seemed to happen when one of two peeps removed covers to renew leaking seals) then there was a fair bit of turning over to get the pump to prime before the engine would catch. But I'm no techie so no doubt someone who is will give a better reply.

There is a push button type lift pump on the top of my fuel filter holder...I always fill my filters before screwing on....a good cranking of the engine should draw fuel through in a few seconds.

This is not common to all Bongos Haydn - possibly more without than with.

am i right in thinking people are talking about a primer for the fuel filter?

Thats what I'm on about...primer/lift pump....same thing arn't they ???

The manual shows a primer button on top of the fuel filter housing, but neither my van or spare engine has one. I've had the head off twice which involves removing the injectors & pipes. On both occasions is has fired up on reassembly after just a few revolutions on the starter. Its seems the Bongo is a lot more forgiving in this respect compared to modern diesel engines that have a rubber bulb in the fuel line for priming.

Thanks for the replies on the fuel bleeding.
Charged up the battery overnight and got the old Land-Rover running on the hand-throttle (a bit block of wood), jump leads between the two and cranked it over, and over, and over, and over..............
A few coughs, but no sustained running. Tried Eazistart, but to no avail. Starter got pretty hot and I got cross and went in the house!
There is no lift pump bulb on the fuel filter (well not yet anyway). THe only thing that occured to me was that the fuel shut-off solenoid might be stuck in the closed position. Can anyone advise me on the wiring connections to this please. I have the injection pump off the old engine, which may yield any parts that I may require.

Fitz - when I first got my Freda I had a starting problem and it turned out to be the Engine Fuse in the bank of fuses by the driver's right knee - just a thought!

dont know thats why i asked! , I thought they all had them too, my old bongo had one, but i dont know about this bongo, will have to check now, i have the old one anyway so if this hasnt i might swap them over

A lift pump is something different and not all have a manual primer.
I fill the filter before starting after a filter change and it starts without fail
