My bongo is making a hisssing type noise

Post by mblakeway » Tue Mar 03, 2009 8:12 pm

Hello all

I have noticed that when the turbo kicks in there is a hissing type noise. It seems like its coming from the front end of the van, almost sounds like air is escaping somewhere. I dont know if anyone has had this before. I find that when the turbo kicks in the noise starts then as the turbo eases back down the noise goes. As I mentioned its like a hissing sound, like air leaking from a tyre. Sounds silly but not sure how else to describe it.

Any help is always appreciated. Is there a garage that deals in imports in the stevenage area as I would like some work to be done on the van.

Many thanks

Mark

It's just the sound of the turbo spooling up, add a K&N to make it louder!

Check your seat clips are tightened down properly, may be time to "adjust" the bent spring section with a couple of hammer taps to tighten them up a bit  Worked wonders with mine.

Thanks for the information, will look into the seat clips.

Just sounds a bit louder than a normal turbo spinning up. As I said, its a bit like air leaking out of a tyre.

You could always check your hoses. I had a similiar noise coming from my Bongo, it turned out to be a pinprick hole in one of my hoses.

How about the snapped stud on the exhaust manifold syndrome :?:

Unless you've driven round a snake park lately

Hope you find out soon

sounds like a possible leak on the boost side maybe an intercooler leak ,particuarly if it's when under load.

I'm with stevie - check all hoseclips from the turbo to the intercooler and out the intercooler to the inlet manifold - it's a long and winding road...................... :-({|=

Thanks for the information,

where is the intercooler?

I will have a look at the hoses and stuff tomorrow, could you give me some advice on where to start!
I have checked the exhaust manifold, all ok on that side of things. The head was replaced a few months ago and all the fixings were changed, still I checked them today.

Thank you all

Intercooler behind the radiator - the 2 air ducts under the front bumper feed air to it.
Sounds like a loose clip to me - especially if the head was recently replaced - hope they haven't forgotten to tighten anything else

Sounds really daft, but it couldnt be your roof seals are damaged. We had this hissing for a while which got louder the faster we went and eventually turned into a squealing noise, it was then I realised it was the roof and the nice folk on here helped me diagnose it. small holes in the rubber seal was the cause and easily fixed. Probably something more Technie, but thought I'd mention it anyway

I've read this thread with interest. We've got the same issue with ours - the hissing gets louder under load and is audable at about 65mph up a slight slope on a motorway for example. I'll also be checking hoses etc. soon!

I know our radiator was replaced by the last owner - any potential link? I have very limited knowledge on turbos, intercoolers etc, let along where they are on the Bongo :?
