How much for a head?

Post by Mack » Thu Feb 12, 2009 4:25 pm

It appears that my head is leaking - it's hurting now - and will need to be replaced. Had crack test and apparently it is "porous". I'm looking at £1300 to replace it - is this about right? How much for a new engine? What are the chances of it happening again?

you can get engins off scrapped bongos probably cheaper.

However they may last forever or may last 6 months

If you get the head changed properly and the cooling system sorted( flushed new rad etc) your engine should be good as new.

I know nothing, but I do wonder, if the alloy head at 10-14 years old becomes brittle and thats why so many crack so a brand new "good quality" head should not have the same problems

Hi Mack, sorry to hear of your troubles.

A bit of a "how long is a piece of string" question really. There are heads advertised on ebay around the £300 mark but I've heard the occasional report of dubious quality with these but that could be dependant on the talent of the fitter.

Mine was done by a local Bongo Friendly spannerman for £1100 all in. I think £750 of that was for the fully built up head, the rest ancillaries, labour & vat. Took it in at 9am, collected it at 5. A fair wad of cash but, fourteen months down the line, its not missed a beat. (Recommend sticking new piston rings in while its in bits to be on the safe side if you're going to do this)

I'm certain it can be done for half that price but, sometimes you get what you pay for. I still feel its was money well spent.

Good luck.

Sorry to hear that Mack :( Is that £1300 all in? If so that doesn't seem too bad to me if it's done properly by someone who knows what they're doing. I guess you could get it done cheaper, but I don't know that cheaper is better when it comes to sorting the head out.
