Aircon Compressor change.

Post by Geoff Drucquer » Thu Feb 19, 2009 1:39 pm

Old air compressor is knackered (clutch ceased) and have bought a secondhand one(clutch working). I was thinking of changing this myself, by using plumbers pipe freeze on inlet and outlet pipes to compressor, disconnecting old compressor fitting new one, and recharging with a Halfords bottle. Any reason why this won't work?
Also black wire to compreesor has no current when a/c button pressed. Where does this wire go to so I can trace fault?

Take it to an a/c specialist and get the charge removed and the system purged. You will NOT manage to freeze the inlet/outlet pipework contents. The boiling point of the contents is around -40degC.
Then change the compressor, get the system purged again, fully pressure/vacuum tested and re-charged.
If you just refill it using a bottle from Halfords after changing the compressor the chances are very good that it will all leak away very quickly and the moisture in there will block it up faster than you can say "why is it not working?"

Please let us know where you get the job done Geoff, as our A/C is needing a top up.....I hope is just a top up thats needed. If not then I fancy removing the complete system, which could mean less work for the engine, and a better air flow for the radiator?. :-k
