the bodykit was Bin Bongoed's idea (see above)
I'm not overly keen on the idea of covering up the rust, or having the bodykit!! Just thought i'd do my thinking on the forum to see if anyone has managed to stop the rot without too much hassle/expense.
think i'll start worrying about what bit of rust to tackle on my TDM850 instead!!
cheers

Re: Rust!!!!!
A full Waxoyl, underseal and box section treatment is expensive. I had mine done by Rustbusters in Poole a month after I bought it as an new import. I paid £650 and it took 24 hours for the clean and then the Wayoyl to set.
The Bongo seemed completely rust free when I bought it; a big reason for choosing that one. This was confirmed when it went up on the platform to be checked before it was treated. I even got invited to admire how good it was. It had spent its 12 years up a mountain in the South of Japan, a combination of hot climate and high altitude that seemed to work.
Nearly a year later there is still not a mark on it. I was told after the initial treatment to expect about ten more years from it in a UK climate. If the rest of the Bongo matches that it will do well.

Re: Rust!!!!!
That's it Alan. I went to the same place as Rhod used only they took three days over my bongo. Rhod asked them to do his quicker as he waited at a b&b while I was at my sister's. They even give you a certificate and a guarantee. Morag used another place further south. The only way I can see that being successful is to have the underside completely sandblasted to remove the brown rusty bits before sealing it - quite a job and also quite a job to seal everything up that doesn't need blasting - is that how they did it Tony?

Re: Rust!!!!!
Does the Bongo have a separate chassis? (As far as I can remember it looked as though there were box-section rails running its length underneath). In which case, in theory it should be 'ok' to simply treat the existing rust to prevent it going further, and then cover it with side skirts and wheel arches!
However, if it relies on the cills for structural strength, then clearly that's a no-no.
I just don't know.
(Makes you realise you should take extra care if buying a 'bodykitted' car!!)

Re: Rust!!!!!
I am not suggesting to ignore rust, that would be disastrous. But if you get rust in a sight line, it will most likely at least become visible again. When chopping the wheel arches out and replacing, the weld seam will be in a sight line on the major flat panel of the van. Since 2 different metals will eventually react with each other, that would eventually become obvious, whereas having cured the rust as best possible, well bonded fibreglass should not react, and would not be on a major sight line. I have had no experience of this, but am merely suggesting it as an possible alternative.wilf1234 wrote:the bodykit was Bin Bongoed's idea (see above)

I am personally actively looking for chopped wheel arches as a first option. But whatever, any rust must be treated.
