Cracked windscreen

Post by northerntaff » Fri Feb 06, 2009 10:20 pm

Hiya Guys, hope you're all well...

Long journey from Cardiff to Morecambe and back again last Friday, Bongo did great but...had a stone flip up on the M6 and now I've got a 2' long crack across the windscreen!!! :x :x :(

Anyway...Autoglass are booked in for this weekend...just need to check my colour tint in daylight tomorrow...never occurred to me to check...I think it's green! ?...or is it bronze!

What I wanted to ask though was...when I did a search there were one or two comments about getting the correct seal fitted. Is this something I need to check with Autoglass before they arrive?

Thanks in advance you knowledgeable lot !

Thanks Kirsty but this was my worry really as this thread just says...

'Remember to tell them it needs a bongo rubber surround too as sometimes another type is usedd which is not such a good fit, cant remember which one but it is on here in a thread somewhere.'

...and I don't get why Autoglass wouldn't be using a 'bongo rubber surround' ? Is there a universal type? I'm hoping they don't use a Mini Metro one !!!!

Wonder if that comment was based on this thread? - http://www.igmaynard.co.uk/bongo/forum/ ... al#p219332

Autoglass replaced my bongo's cracked windscreen a few months ago. I also didn't know what colour the tint is on my bongo glass -- I think it's such a subtle tint that it doesn't matter. It also didn't matter because where I live in South Norfolk the council does not appear to allocate any council tax to repairing minor roads. In the past two months the windscreen has collected a big stone chip and a new crack from the broken-up roads around here. Time for another windscreen soon.

Hi
The local car glass firms PAY the councils NOT to repair the roads....it's good business sense!!!

The tint in the screen is more apparent on cold mornings when misted up.

When i had my screen replaced the guy who did it, (a bongo owner) said that the pukka bongo seal's are prohibitively expensive (in the region of £80!) Whereas the seal from a VW transporter very, almost, fits perfectly, and is around £7.

I'm afraid he was vague on the actual vintage of which "transporter" though i'm afraid... :(

I've had a few "pings" on the M6 near Warrington this past few weeks too, i've only suffered chips to the paint though luckily...

Well here's the update...

Been to see autoglass today. They've confirmed as I thought that it's a green tint. They've got to order it in which will take a few days apparently which I guess you'd expect for a reasonably uncommon vehicle. However, here's what I wasn't expecting...because the vehicle is over 5 years old, an import and because the screen will be over £500 they have to get prior authorisation from the insurance company !

Should know more tomorrow (Monday)...but all I know is my insurance policy (NIG through lifesure) says I'm covred with an excess of £60 so should be okay !!! [-o<

Will update later in the week !

Just to finnish the thread off...

Autoglass got the windscreen and fitted at the wife's work!!

They did a great job and no probs a few weeks later.

Took em a while to get the old one out by all accounts

Did you have any problem re NIG and the cost of the screen? I'm with NIG and my bongo is over 5 years old and an import. I've just put the claim in because of a crack top left corner due to a stone, contacted Autoglass and waiting for confirmation they have the correct parts in Swindon. Of course, Easter's next week!!!! Would appreciate any feedback re this.

BTW the excess is now £75. I ordered the brown tint because i didn't know which was correct!

Hello Jillygumbo.

I'm with NIG too, I don't think you'll have any probs we didn't, it's just that the cost of the windscreen and the age of the vehicle means that Autoglass have to get permission before they order and fit the screen.

I don't know if all Bongo's are the same, but ours is a green tint. If you put a white sheet of A4 paper on one side of the glass and look at the other side - during daylight, it should be easy to see what colour tint you have. - That's if it's something that is important to you.

You should be fine - I had to wait a week+ before they got the screen in stock.
