I reckon that's about right according to the destructions, says to add 30ml of dye per 15l of coolant, bongo has a capacity of 13.5l, so it'll be a very slightly higher concentration.

Has anyone used the dye yet? My Bongo lives on a main road at the front of my house so working around and underneath has to be done with circumspection. A bit selfish but I would find it useful to hear where others have found leaks before adding the dye.

What rate are you losing coolant at Ron? Might it be best just to chuck it in and let it start marking its territory (as it were) so that when the weather is a bit warmer and it's convenient, you can get the U/V torch out and hopefully it will have sprayed an amount sufficient for some easy spotting?

Just losing a little each 10 days or so Mike. I sort of assumed that the traces would be washed away if they were underneath where road spray reaches so I am thinking of leaving using the one bottle until the weather is better for getting underneath. Any feedback from other users would help in knowing where weak spots are likely to be. I wonder how the other Ron went on?

Hi Ron. Best answer to that is probably to paste in part of a PM I sent to Mike - to give him an update, and to thank him for the loan of his dye until I get a replacement for it in Haydn's next batch. Here's the extract, followed beneath by a couple of comments:

"Before I put it into the system, I re-checked for leaks visually/manually (the famous finger test!) very thoroughly, and found that a.) there really didn't seem to be a second one, and b.) the hose clip I had re-positioned and tightened over the known leak WAS still very slowly allowing a bit of seepage. Found I could actually get another three or four turns on the Jubilee Clip screw, without cutting into the hose as I had originally feared - and seemingly no more leak.

Only then installed the dye, and after pumping it round for about half an hour, its absence from anywhere except where it should be, showed me - no more leaks! Did a couple of short local shopping runs yesterday - no loss of coolant. Today, took bull by horns, and we've been out in N Wales, including a pound up to the car park at the top of the road over Moel Famau - no leaks, no loss of coolant, no need for Wheelquick for the moment, I reckon. Have the hose available to get them to change, when I get the Bongo over to them for service."

The one leak I had is probably not much of a clue to "weak spots" for you. It was apparently a very small accidental screwdriver nick when the cambelt was changed recently, necessitating removal and re-fitting of two top hoses and the bleed hose. It IS a clue to check VERY carefully after any work in which hoses ARE removed. After the leak gradually worsened (and eventually triggered the low coolant alarm), I thought I had fixed it, as above - but a day or two later, there was more coolant loss, which I could not immediately locate.

It was originally thought there were two Bongo shots in a 30ml dye bottle, so I had planned to use the first one to locate the second leak, then get Wheelquick to change the nicked hose (necessitating coolant drain/refill) plus whatever second leak repair might be needed. I would then have installed the second shot for ongoing protection. Realising there was only enough for one shot, I went back to the Mark 1 Eyeball/wet finger/no dye method - successfully as above. I'm now more than happy just to have the dye aboard to show there are no current leaks, even though it didn't have to do a detection job this time. It does fluoresce fine, by the way, so it will do its stuff if she does ever spring another one.

Thanks for that info Ron - what is the 'finger test' - I havent seen that mentioned before. Bet you are relieved to have found and dealt with the coolant loss.

Yes, dead chuffed, Ron - and it's still holding, although I AM carrying a supply of 50/50 mix coolant just in case, and am prepared to call on my AA Relay cover to get the Bongo to Wigan, if it does fail again before a service is due. Looks good, though. Finger test - feeling for leaking coolant in areas you can't easily visually check (although a cheapo long handled Halfords inspection mirror also helps). Cheers.
