...is this?

Under the lift-off centre panel (the one you have to remove before accessing the engine) I noticed a wire running long the top which continues down the back and heads to - I presume - the seat belt sensors. Near the handbrake another wire splits off from this main one and goes to a nearby 'component' which sticks down through the top of the panel and pokes into the engine compartment below. Looking at it from underneath, the 'probe' from this black component is around 15mm long and 5mm diameter - looks like black plastic.

What does it 'sense'?! I can only imagine it is heat - as in "the engine is on fire!!"

Any ideas?

Close - It's the sensor for the engine bay fan - it works through the ECU

Not sure what it is, but we've got one too. It could be some temperature sensor for the aircon, or similar. We've also got a Smurf on the dashboard & they don't seem to be related
