Gearbox problem ? Help

Just been out in my Bongo,started to lose power doesnt seem to be going up the gears under revs or up hill [underload],put my foot down and power dies,it has been suggested its a gearbox problem could this be right ? If so does anyone know somewhere in the North East for a recon box ?Thanks.

Hi Grim,sounds more like a fuel starvation problem,have you checked the filters.

My mechanic suggested it might also be that,its going in on Tuesday i have spoken to the nearest Bongo garage to me i can find and they suggested the same filters,banjos ? so heres hoping its something reasonably straight forward,i havent driven the Bongo for a week it has been stood until today,might that have any bearing ? Thanks for your swift reply.

The van will run happily with the bajo filter removed (temporarily). If it runs ok then get a new banjo filter in your own time. If it is still running badly then at least you know it isn't the banjo filter.

Change the fuel filter next and see if that cures it.

If it doesn't things get complicated and you probably need a mechanic.

If you need a replacement gearbox in full running order get in touch with me by PM. I may be able to help.

Hi I dont know where Harry is coming from here,if you have to remove a filter from your vehicle if it is a fuel or oil filter REPLACE it.Do not run without a filter.

Thanks folks,my mechanical knowledge could be covered on the back of a beer mat,so i do appreciate all your help,my cousin is my mechanic and a good un' so apart from the ill timed cost i am sure it can be sorted.

The banjo filter is just a small gauze dome thing - I agree with Harry, no harm to run without it for a short time.

Teenmal.....I'm speaking from experience...having covered over 163,000km in my bongo in 3.5 years and had to deal with a blocked banjo filter on two occasions. Dirty fuel rarely gets past the main filter and only then will the banjo filter do its job.

If you make sure the main fuel filter is efficient you can temporarily run with the banjo filter off.

After my last 'fuel incident' the banjo filter was damaged in trying to remove it so it was taken out completely. After approx 20,000km of normal running it was still ok.

I agree it is not desireable to run without the banjo filter but it certainly aint the end of the world not to do so.

I have been a Service Engineer, servicing and maintaining petrol and diesel pumps on garages /forecourts /and commercial sites including ambulance and fire services etc for FORTY +YEARS.The filters in the pumps were to protect the consumer ie YOU from contamination.I would not remove a filter without replacing it.

Was I wasting my time

I dont think we'll agree on this so we'll have to agree to disagree and let peeps do what they think is best.

I'd just like to point out that the banjo filter (the only one I'd remove temporarily) is not part of the fuel pump and is after the main fuel filter.

I suspect it is only there to stop lumps of swarf/cack that might get past the main filter or from some part of the system starting to disintergrate. Contaminated fuel should be stopped by the main filter before it gets there.

Well,i have just given the Bongo another short run and it started to 'die' on me after a few minutes so as suggested by my brother [mechanic] i put it into neutral as soon as i encountered the problem and it still 'died',suggesting it is a fuel starvation problem.As i would hope being in neutral and still having trouble rules out the gearbox ??

Sounds like fuel starvation to me....or chech for seepage around the fuel pump (front, back amd under)...and before snyone says it there is only one fuel pump...not three.

I've said it before - I reckon the banjo filter gets choked with fine fibres from the MAIN filter, which is made from paper.

In fairness to poor old Harry, I think he was suggesting removing the banjo filter simply as part of trying to find possible cause for the problem. If removing it does not result in an improvement, then clearly it is an innocent party and goes straight back in where it belongs. But it is interesting how long one Bongo ran without one and came to no harm.
