Do I have an imminent MOT failure?

Post by pete wylie » Wed Jan 21, 2009 5:31 pm

Hi people, MOT booked in tomorrow so have just gone through the basics, tyres, lights, wipers and if its fitted does it work etc. Everything ok bar one thing, there appears to be no dash board light to tell me my front fogs are on. The rear fog, fitted on import, has a light on as part of the switch. Help required?

Hi Pete, chances are the MOT guy won't switch them on as part of the test... So you should be ok.

Don't worry, if you drive around with them on plenty of folk coming the other way will lend you their twin 55watt "warning lights" to tell you you've left them on when it ain't foggy any more.

And in Cambs the local rozzers are known to use the display of such lights (and similar ones to the rear), when they ain't legal, as a good excuse (especially around closing time) to undertake "non-random" checks which often involve a "big sniff" as the window goes down.

Doesn't help with the MOT though, for that just take the switch out and tell the tester they aren't connected up - if they ask.

Good luck pete, i'm sure it'll be fine....

Bongo's seem to have a really good pass rate in general. If it does fail on something, chances are it's only something relatively minor...

Got me fingers crossed for ya! [-o<

Front fog lamps, spotlamps and rear wash wipes are not part of the MOT as they are not fitted to all cars - was informed of this by the MOT testers where I get my tests done. :)

Don't forget to stick a bit of veg oil in to the lower your emissions ,give it a good run to warm it up before the test as well.

No light in the front fog switch on my '96 Bongo either - I haven't worked out how to get at the bulb yet. I think that there was a post a few weeks back saying that the factory fitted fog switch only illuminates for location - i.e. the light comes on with the general dash illumination & doesn't indicate whether the fogs are on or not. There's definitely no warning light in the dash cluster - I had a good look when I had it off to fit the low coolant warning light.
