Best oil for the job

Post by mvmathews » Sun Jan 18, 2009 3:18 pm

Hi There - its time to change the oil again in the trusty bongo, last time went for magntec, it was expensive and I'm not certain the best. Can anyone recomend a good quality oil. The dear bongo in question has done 176k (but still runs like a dream) and I change the oil every 15k.

Many Thanks

these guys work out of one of the units opposite me in work and they seems to be pretty cheap (cheaper than halfords anyway)

Mazda recommend an oil change every 5,000km - oil has improved over the past 14 tears but I still change mine at 5000 miles...............

Actually, anyone got a link for the differnece between 0W-40 , 10W-60 etc and the difference between Fully Synthetic and Semi-Synthetic

Anything that describes the difference and which is best for the Bongo engine 2.5T?

The difference is how thick it is.

0 is thin 60 is (very) thick.

I use a 5w-30 (maybe 10w-40 in summer) semi synthetic and change it every 5-6,000 miles, but then I rarely do any driving in heavy traffic as I don't commute, or do many short journeys, both of which are worst conditions for oil.

But this is what Castrol say for the Mazda B2500 pick-up which I think is supposed to have the same engine.

Edge Turbo Diesel 5W-40 (a) 6.3litres
Magnatec Diesel 10W-40 B3

(a) Alternative recommendations: -15°C to 40°C, 10W-30; <10°C, 5W-30

I have always used the best quality 10/40 semi synth i could afford at the time. Intervals? My bongo is pretty much put into hibernation over the winter, if say, i have a service in november, then only do 700 miles or so from november till march, then the interval on that occasion would be an oil change every 700 miles or so. My average mileage per year in the bongo is very low, yet i still stick to three services a year regardless.
