lights out

Post by Tiny » Sat Jan 17, 2009 6:21 pm

Wondering if someone can help.

Neither of our headlights are working, sidelights work as do all the others, but niothing from the headlights. we have popped the bonnet and checked the connections are ok (we had a problem with this before) but still nothing.

Any suggestions?
At this stage I need to explain we are complete technophobes so "check the fuses" would need some instructions on where we might find them, and what we might look for.

My problem has been confounded by realising my membership expired just before Christmas and bongo towers is no closed till Tues. so cant search the archives or find a bongo friendly garage in Portsmouth.

So if anyone out there could help the mechanically inept, would be gretful.
Cheers

The fuse diagrams are in the members area. You will find that the fuse for the headlights is under the bonnet. It is fuse no.3 on the diagram which is the third fuse from the left in the top cluster of fuses. The fuse rating is 30A.

Under the bonnet, middle leftish from memory, is a black box with 4 fuses in, headlamps should be no. 3 & it's a 30 amp.

I've known both bulbs blow. Take one out and try it on the battery, or a charger.

Have they failed on both main and dipped?
Take a torch, toilet roll, and tea bags.

Are the individual headlights on seperate fuses? So if fuses, and lamps are ok, it's a possibility that the relay is playing up.

Heres a few threads on relays..........

But make sure you don't handle the glass blub surface as they (halogen) bulbs do not like any dirt/grease marks on them and tend to blow.

Have you got a multimeter. I'm no leccie and didn't have one until I got the Bongo. Now I have one I don't know how I ever got by without one. You can test for open circuits (e.g. wires broken as in blown bulbs; duff switches that aren't passing power to wiring etc.) and generally go on the Sherlock Holmes in order to track down the problem source.
