erm,is my bongo abs?

Post by hogggman » Mon Jan 12, 2009 8:17 pm

hi,
i feel the wrath of kirsty already.......................
anyway,i felt sure that my bongo would have abs braking, but never having touched or even inspected the brakes,i took it for granted.however,it`s nearly mot time, and it occurred to me today that i`d never seen an abs light come on,or go out,on the dashboard.so,please put me out of my misery, does my `98 v6 have abs?i know it`s easy to check, but it`s dark out there and i can`t find a torch.it ma be that i dislodged a bulb when i removed the instrumennt panel to check some bulbs.
thanks

Slam the brakes on - if the wheels lock, you haven't got ABS  .

In fairness, i have 4X4 with no ABS, on occasion have had cause to break heavy & find the breaking system pretty good. [-o< :P

As you say - it's easy to check 8) .......how would anyone else know if you have it or not unless they've been rummaging under your bonnet and taken a mental note?

The sure way to check is to look for a big metal block located in the top RH (as you look at it) side of the under bonnet area with lots of metal brake pipes coming out of it - if you have one that is the ABS unit.

If you haven't got one, it isn't.

point taken dandy,i will go and check.i hoped that one of the more technically minded folk such as yourself might be able to tell me without me checking.i assumed that maybe all v6`s either were or weren`t abs,one way or another.
thanks again

I stand to be corrected (as ever) but i think ABS is as optional on the petrols as it is on the diesels... I think the chances of having/not having ABS is more an age related issue.

I didnt realise that mine had ABS fitted as Id never heard it working (Capt Slow doesnt go very fast    ) until the latest cold snap when driving onto the car park at work didnt realise it was covered in black ice,I narrowly avoided doing some serious damage to a number of cars   ,I reckon it was the ABS and the skill of the nut behind the wheel that brought the Bongo to a very scary stop!! Just in time I might add and i mean very very close (couple of inches) of the last object in my direction of travel a brand new Astra, this after avoiding two other cars whilst sliding!!! #-o #-o #-o

Not all have it - of the 5 bongos I "look after" only 2 have it.
