severe power loss

Post by salmonhaircut » Fri Jan 09, 2009 8:37 pm

Hi , I wonder if anyone can help me. The bongo has suffered from severe power loss.
This is the catalogue of events.

Last Sunday - appeared to overheat , temp guauge went right up after a few miles - took to garage , left overnight, checked next day and no porblem identified. It was suggested that the temp guage may have frozen in cold weather. Vehicle used over next days, no apparent temp probs. Weds- poor performance- stayed in low gear , seemed v slow on flat , uphill slowed to 2mph . Took to garage again who diagnosed low transmission fluid. Re filled and collected Thursday evening. Husband drove uphill and seemed fine.
Today Friday exact same situation as Weds with power loss so severe on hill it stalled at top. Now left parked up awaiting another trip to garage . Not moved it as I had to park and leave it to walk to work. Any suggestions as to what the problem could be are welcome. Our garage are good but nnot necessarily bongo specialist.
Thanks, love salmon

It all sounds like it might be something to do with electrical stuff. Connections? Dodgy TPS? Dandywarhol is a good man for this kind of thing. Hope he may reply soon but research old threads in the meantime maybe?

I'm just a wee bit suspicious about the low autobox fluid thing. Did they check the level with engine warm and running, and gearstick set to 'D' as I think I've read that is the correct way to check the level. And how would it have suffered fluid loss without you being aware?

Hi salmon - long time no hear................

1 Do you have the cold climate model with the exhaust valve? Identified by a switch to the right of the steering column with an engine motif - valve is known to stick

2 Something sucked into air intake - lift driver's seat engine cover, remove air filter lid and try engine.
The autobox fluid may be a red herring (pardon the colour pun)

Frozen temp gauge a loada sh1t - who they kidding?

Good luck

The overheat sound like one of my early 'incidents'

Very cold (frozen) day about a month after I got the van.....overheated after 3 miles.

Perfectly ok when engine cooled down but diagnosis showed bottom hose has frozen so thermostat was inoperative. Remedy...check your antifreeze.

Loss of power sounds a bit like fuel starvetion...could your diesel have waxed up and be partially obstructing your fuel filter?

That's just what I was going to suggest - it certainly sounds likely as that is just what happened to mine a while ago, but it was dirty diesel not waxing, and a change of filter sorted it out.

A couple on here spent a fortune trying to find the low power/fuel supply problem a while back. Turned out to be a leaf in the fuel tank.

whether you check the auto box fluid with the drive in D or P or even engine off will not make such a huge differance as you are describing.....I don't do mine in drive and to date have had no problems.....I do know the book recommends putting it in D engine running.

Thanks for all the suggestions. All fine now, the bongo just had a touch of Man Flu ( or Van Flu). Left it over the weekend, on Sunday when weather thawed a bit we took it for a drive up and down all the local hills . After chucking out a load of muck from the exhaust it improved no end. It just needed a new clean hanky ( or filter which the garage fitted next day) and a day off work!!! ( a bit like Man flu then !!!)

Have you checked your antifreeze strength? Sounds as though the coolant may have frozen
