Noise Stainless steel exhaust

Post by al & chris » Wed Jan 07, 2009 7:50 pm

Looks like we might have to get a new exhaust system soon. Looking at getting stainless steel but worried about people saying there is a lot more noise from stainless than mild steel. Is this right should #-o we stick with a normal steel exhaust.

No - any difference will be minimal and the standard set up (especially the back box) is rubbish.

Stainless is often noisier to start with, but quietens once it's got a coating of soot inside.

 I have to agree with John, stainless in my experience is louder than normal,
I have fitted them to many classic cars in the past and found this to be the case.
cheers! party on dudes.

Haven't tried stainless on a Bongo but I've fitted an Izeura centre section and it resonates a fair bit. Excellent service but I suppose you get what you pay for...............

Maybe clamping a giant jubilee clip around the silencer - see if that''ll stop it ringing............. :-k

ours is louder when i press the right pedal down. ive found it to be louder when the engine is cold (dont know why).
the stainless system gives the bongo a bit of a nice throaty burble without going boy racer style.

Looks like it might be a stainless system that we will get. Anyone recommend any mail order places to buy from, then our local garage can fit it for us. Dont want to have to go to far for fitting.

Mine sounds a little bit "throaty" much the same as mike (dreamwarriors) stainless system, I managed to pick up mine second hand, so didn't have the "new price hit", It turned out to be a fair bit cheaper than a spurious aftermarket mild steel item.

Factor in the cost of tubes of solvol autosol after purchase!
