volt sensing relay

hi guys,help! on my leisure battery set up i have the usual split charge relay set up
with a volt sensing relay,so as not to have to connect anything to the alternator.
my problem is i keep getting a flat starter battery,when i took a look today i
noticed that the green led on the volt sensing relay was lit constantly,with no
key in ignition.is this the norm as i thought the led should only be lit when
the switch between the two batteries had been made to indicate that the leisure battery
is being charged.cheers tay.

vsr could have a fault its been fitted for almost a year with no probs untill
this recent cold spell.i never took any notice if the light was on or off when
i first fitted it and im pretty sure i wired everything up correctly.is there
anyway to check the vsr for a fault?

you can check to see if there is a voltage going back from the vsr to the starter battery, disconnect the wire going from the sb to the vsr and use a multimeter. it depends a lot on the model of vsr you have but as said usually the the vsr shouldnt allow a voltage to go back to the sb. have you put on a new sb or is it still original. a cold spell is enuf to kill a battery.

Measure the current from the relay flowing into the L/B. It should only start once the engine has started and the S/B voltage has exceeded the voltage the relay is set for. Without details of the relay I can't say what that will be, but you would expect a few seconds from once the engine has started at least.

Hi Tay,
check the voltage on both batteries if you have the Exact reading on both,you probably have a relay problem.
Disconnect the relay,and try it for a day or two.

hi guys quick update,relay is ok,started engine led on vsr comes on,turn engine off led stays on for
about 2-3 minutes then goes off. i think it was just me being impatient.going to get battery
checked as i think this is the culprit with only a 75ah rating and recent cold weather
i think its kaput.thanks for help,tay.

I have a 110Ah starter battery and my Bongo has been starting better than my Jeep Cherokee with its 75Ah battery. We have had overnight temps in the Scottish Borders down to -5°c over the past week.
