4wd vs 2wd - who ate all the pies?
I have been looking at the spec on the Bongo’s and have found that the 2wd is 1770kg and the 4wd is 2340kg. Is this correct? Before I bought mine I wanted a 2wd but would have taken a 4wd if the right one had come along, luckily for me I got exactly what I was after. One thing that struck me looking at all these Bongo’s was how many more heavy castings there were under the 4wd for all the extra diffs, gearing and prop shafts. Didnt think it was half a tonne more!

I haven't got my manual handy, but I didn't think the difference was anywhere near that much. Are you sure you're not comparing tintops and AFTs

Yup - that looks like a 2WD TT compared to a 4WD AFT it should be easily that much difference.
Re: 4wd vs 2wd - who ate all the pies?
I am quite sure that an unconverted 4WD AFT is well under 2 tonnes, and certainly not as heavy as 2340kg. I have a feeling that they are around 1850kg.
However, I am sure that someone will give us a difinitive answer soon.

I think you are about there - not got a manual to hand either, but I seem to have 1860kg in my mind for a 4wd and roughly 100kg less for a 2wd. (I am only refering to AFT's).moonshine wrote:I am quite sure that an unconverted 4WD AFT is well under 2 tonnes, and certainly not as heavy as 2340kg. I have a feeling that they are around 1850kg.

Re: 4wd vs 2wd - who ate all the pies?
This may shed some light - http://specs.amayama.com/mazda/bongo_friendee/ - 1840 seems to be Kerb weight for a 2.5td 4wd AFT, the lightest one seems to be a 2l tintop at 1600. A 4wd tintop is heavier than a 2wd AFT & then you have to factor in how many seats & what gearbox - getting sleepy now - yawn
.
Pick your own & compare, I just grabbed a few at random from the amayama site.

Interesting stats, so 4wd adds 20kg. Not too bad...

bugger what does adding a bull bar
rear nudge bar
full tank of fuel
towbar and trailer
stereo, freeview , sub and amp
add to the weight ????
I NOW HAVE AN ASTRA JUST THE BONGO TO FIND A NEW HOME THEN I AM OUT OF HERE
Re: 4wd vs 2wd - who ate all the pies?
That cant be correct. Anyone who has had a good look under the 4wd and 2wd can see there is far more heavy running gear. I would have thought a min of 100kg difference more like 200kg. O well it was just an observation, i guess there are loads of variables. A full tank will add nearly 60kgInteresting stats, so 4wd adds 20kg. Not too bad..

Re: 4wd vs 2wd - who ate all the pies?
I dunno Daniel, i don't have any other weight stats to hand, i have no reason to think that Teenmal's figures are innacurate. The front diff alone must weigh a fair bit i'd have thought....Daniel wrote:That cant be correct. Anyone who has had a good look under the 4wd and 2wd can see there is far more heavy running gear. Re: 4wd vs 2wd - who ate all the pies?
If you read my post & look on the link to amayama in it, it shows all the variables, roof, seats, gearbox, drivetrain, engine, etc & all the different combinations & their associated kerbweights if you're that bothered. Teenmal isn't wrong, neither is he definatively right
