Having just changed my rad, I can confirm the two brass pipes at the bottom are for the ATF cooler/heater. Interesting that they chose to weld them up, as they have no connection to the coolant ('cos they carry transmission fluid). Glad you've had a sucessful repair.

Yes, thats why the pipes weren't connected. Capping them to keep the rust out was all that was really needed. No harm done though.
