Nice & simple... if you want higher-tech, a pen-type torch put inside the neck of the opening at night or on a dull morning (a few of those of late!) will show up the colour & level of coolant in the murkiest (mine) tank.
Having said that, if I hadn't fitted a Haydn alarm, the chances are that my motor would be scrap by now -the water pump started leaking last month...
