steam from coolant or exhaust fumes ?

Post by andyb36 » Mon Dec 15, 2008 2:12 pm

well after reading so many problems with overheating etc etc etc, i thought i was one on saturday

it was really cold sat afternoon and i drove to my friends, after pulling up at his electric gates at the top of the drive, i sat there for a few minutes waiting for him to open,,,then,,,

i saw a small cloud-clouds of steam -mist etc etc coming up around the left hand side of the bonnet,,,,,,,OMG,,, panic set in ,,, looked at temp gauge,,was fine,,,,switched off instantly...

lol, then his gates opened,,, so restarted and drove 40 ft down to drive outside house,,,,switched off then looked under bonnet......expecting at least some noise -steam etc..........nothing....

although i did notice the clouds of steam from my breath because of the cold.....

well checked coolant,,, no level drop ( been the same level since stourport )

looked for any other steam from pipes etc,,, nothing,,,,,,so ran her up and waited,,,, nothing,,

very nervous driving back home, and now i dont want to take her out lmao

WAS IT JUST THE STEAM / CONDENSATION FROM THE EXHAUST, BECAUSE THERE WERE BUSHES BOTH SIDES AND THE WIND FROM BEHIND???

drove home not a problem , ran up to temperature and i looked under bonnet again, and nothing....

Was the steam actually coming from the bonnet? Or had you switched on the headlights a few moments previously?

That's the problem with reading so many overheating threads
The truth is that only a few Bongos actually overheat, but we get paranoid at the slightest sight of steam - probably, as you say, something on the exhaust 8) 8)

i had the lights on because it was slightly dull and foggy, (been on for 10 mins whilst i did the journey)

what made it worst, is that it came up from around the left hand side where the expansion tank is #-o #-o #-o #-o :? :? :?

and same side as exhaust [-o< [-o< [-o< [-o<

well fingers crossed , it was all nothing........

no leak or loss, and on a cold crabby day ?????

and no hot antifreeze kinda smell !!!!!

You didn't go through a puddle or anything and get water on a hot exhaust?
