Rear tailgate struts
Excuse my ignorance but am new to this site. Just bought a Bongo today and the rear door struts are past their best, anyone know where to get spares, if thats at all possible.

Do you mean tatty, or just won't hold the tailgate up?

Sorry for late reply - got a price for 2 used ones from need a part £81 inc delivery, may try and see what it will cost to get the originals re-gassed, thanks for info guys......
Re: Rear tailgate struts
Don't know anything about regassing struts but I love poking my oar in. I see from the "Bongo roof won't go fully up" thread that rob7w was quoted £17.50 per strut by SGS-engineering for regassing the roof struts . Don't know if the tailgate struts would be similar.gslaw2995 wrote:Sorry for late reply - got a price for 2 used ones from need a part £81 inc delivery, may try and see what it will cost to get the originals re-gassed, thanks for info guys......

....and there's no telling how much oomf the Need-a-Part (who is v busy selling on ebay these days) have in them. Probably OK but you can't be sure and thats quite a lot of dosh. I think I'd opt for regassing myself
PS - I mean getting the struts regassed, not actually regassing myself

Re: Rear tailgate struts
I think we're talking about two different struts here (4 really 'cos they're in pairs).
The ones to hold the tailgate open, in first post, and the ones to raise the roof, if you can imagine such a thing at a Bongo Bash.
Different struts, so probably very different prices.

Re: Rear tailgate struts
The cost for re-gassing doesn't differ as much as the price for replacements, as the work involved is much the same and the difference in gas makes very little difference.Bob wrote:I think we're talking about two different struts here (4 really 'cos they're in pairs).

Re: Rear tailgate struts
If you can get them re-gassed, then that's surely the first thing to try.
If, however, they are 'shot' (seals burst/leaking), then try a search for 'breaking bongo' or similar on ebay, and email everyone you come across - the difference between a 'private' breaker and the pros can be significant.

Re: Rear tailgate struts
I eventually have sent them away to be regassed at SGS on Monday, they say they will return within the week with a 2 yr guarantee (£18.50 each), however if they are damaged beyond repair they sell replacements for £55 each.
Will let you know how they are when I get them back.
Cheers

Re: Rear tailgate struts
Good luck. Not heard the possibility of 'damaged beyond repair' mentioned on here before so it will be interesting to see what they advise. Re: Rear tailgate struts
They will do them just fine.
Re: Rear tailgate struts
Got the refurbed struts back today, cost about £50 with vat and delivery, just fitted them (only takes 15mins or so) absolutely superb, much better than having to prop it open with a piece of modified pipe in the old struts.....!! Would totally recommend this firm, speak to a guy called Andrew, I said I would be letting other Forum users know, so you may get a little discount.....
