Faulty Fuel Gauge

My fuel guage has stopped working and is at the bottom of empty, at the time it was about half full of diesel.
This happened about a week ago, and the day after it did start to work again, however it soon stopped working and has not functioned since. I filled the tank up completely with diesel thinking this may unstick the sensor, but no joy.
Could someone please explain to a layman the possible problem area and its rectifcation? All the other guages etc. are working fine so I presume it's not a fuse.
I imagine that it may be wise to check the fuel sensor, and if this is a good starting point could someone please explain how to go about this?

First and most simple is to check the earth wire on the sender unit...They fail for a pastime....the sender is in fromt of the middleseat on the drivers side. Pull back the carpet and you will find a silver cover...It's under that. Just put a extra earth wire....if it still dosn't work...come and ask again.

A very easy fix is some wire with two crimped eye terminals at either end one small sothat the small screw on the top of the gague assembly willv catch it and one large enough to let the blt hol ding down the bench rail will fit through it . worked for me the wire doesnt lift the plate too much and no drilling required . missfixit put up photos of the area before

you can stick gague on full if it make you feel good
