Heater fan problem!

Hi All,
The heater blower has packed in again with me. I have checked that the fan is running free, which it is. The resistor that I recently soldered had blown 3 contacts, I have just re soldered them and replaced it but still no blower! Could it be something else or do I need a new resistor? Appreciate any help with this one,

try 12v across the fan direct to see if it works, I suspect it needs to come out & be overhauled, the brushes may be worn out or gunked up, or it may be binding enough on start up to blow the fan resistor. they are moisture traps unfortunately, especially if not used regularly.

Thanks Kirsty, Do I need to remove the fan to try this , and what exactly do I do! How much work is it to remove the fan to give it a clean.

I think you'll probably need to remove the fan to do it, I can't remember how accessible the cables were to test it, but to be honest if you've blown the resistor pack twice, I'd say it's time for the fan to be overhauled. DavveblueOzzie is trying to extract his on another thread. Maybe combine threads and share knowledge etc? there are factsheets in the members area on mending the fan - can't remember how detailed they are on how to remove the fan but suggest have a peek.

Hi,
I Have been trying to discover the problem with my heater fan today. Checked to see if the resistor had blown again, but it is fine. Then checked the fan to make sure it is running freely, also fine. After checking these I switched the blower on and low and behold it worked! But if I stop it and try it again, nothing, unless I spin the fan manually first. Would love your thoughts on this, I'm not sure, but could it be the brushes?

I reckon it could be brushes gummed or worn out, whip it out & have a look, destructions on dbo's thread.

Any chance the switch itself is dicky? Could connections have been heat damaged by a previous episode? Not heard of this before on here but there is always a first time
