Are the rubber seals used in braking systems and engines different in some way, because I was always led to believe that any contamination by engine oil of the seals used in braking systems etc. could cause them long-term damage?
But just adding some engine oil in the clutch system to "get you home" isn't likely to present such a serious hazard.
Also the hydraulic fluid already present will protect the seals a fair bit - all I did was flush the system, fit a new slave cylinder and new seals in the master cylinder. As that was OK I just replaced the seals for the reason you mention - in case there were degraded.
