Do I have an exhaust problem?

Post by moo n' mad » Thu Nov 27, 2008 8:43 pm

Our Bongo (SGL5) has developed the following;

Rattles like a bag of nails lots of vibration through the dashand steering wheel
Smell (like bacon frazzles) coming through the vents after using the kickdown and while idling
Fuel consumption right up
Faint windy noise when accelerating
Loss of performance
Handles like a boat

These symptoms are getting worse. My guess was exhaust. We have taken it to an exhaust fitting place who say that the exhaust (pipes I assume) and whole undercarriage are in very good nick.

In a similar forum query Hayden mentioned exhaust valves......whats them then? Can anyone help? Is it safe to drive? We have a meet this weekend luckily only about 20 miles away. [-o<

Rattles and bad handling sounds like anti-roll bar bushes and/or droplinks - both easy and cheap to fix.
Loss of performance and increased fuel consumption could be a blocked air filter (when was it last changed?) or fuel starvation (check filters)
Smell - no idea, unless it's overheating.
Noise when accelerating could just be turbo, or the start of the number one exhaust manifold stud sheared.

It won't address the handling problem but check you haven't got a rag or plastic bag sucked up the air intake to the left (looking at it) of the radiator

I'm guessing he's referring to the valve in the exhaust, with the Winter pack - don't remember anybody mentioning the valves in the engine :?

If that is the case - & it well maybe - & if you have the twin battery set up, check the cold start switch by your right knee isn't on. That alone could cause most of that nastiness.

Good luck, hope its simple.

Regarding your vibrations and handling problems -I would start with a good inspection of the tyres looking especially for any blebs or bulging on the tread of the tyres especially the front tyres . I once had a tyre with a bulge on the tread - and the vibration caused by that was shocking.

Thanks to everyone for the tips and advice. =D>

We have recently had new tyres on the front and a service in September so I might start with the plastic bag and exhaust valve (it is a winter model) I will go check that switch too.

I will pop out shortly and take a closer look, paying especial attention to any trapped pigs. I don't care what anyone says that's just what it smells like.

Yes we are coming tomorrow, I will be off to make some minestrone soup and fresh rolls shortly. Forecast at the moment fog then sun. PS if I find a pig Missfixit do you want me to save you some
