front heating has just packed in, and its getting so so cold

Post by draper3000 » Tue Nov 11, 2008 8:55 pm

Good evening.
Have'nt had chance to investigate fully yet as when I got home it was dark, but on way home from work, turned heating on, including air co up front. Got a possible slight burning smell (at the time I thought it was just warm air on its way), but no hot air....Just lots and lots of cold air.

Any ideas what it would be?

Simply a fuse? (If so where do I find the fuses in the bongo) - (Only bought it at the end of the summer).

Something more expensive???? :(

Any ideas would be greatly received.

Thanks
Jon

If the fan's are blowing ok, check the actuator linkages in the drivers footwell, one may have come off.

I think there are some other photos & threads lurking on the forum about similar problems.

Excellent many many many thanks....

Just found a few tip bits here and there on the forum, seems the better word to search for is blower and not fan heater...

If its not that then I may resort to putting a hot water bottle under the window each morning.... VW bay window styleee... :D

Cheers

also check the hole to drain water from the windscreen is not blocked as water will get into the heater fan

More importantly - check the coolant level - no heat inside can mean no coolant getting to the heater matrix

wil definitely be checking coolant...thanks for the heads up....

just sprayed de-icer on the windows...as it looks like a cold night and that should stop any frost....maybe...

or maybe its a good reason to stay at home and phone work saying I could'nt possibly make it because of the arctic conditions in Surrey...

Just to to let you all know.

Problem solved, not till after I'd got up late and driven to work without time to fix or investigate it.

Anyway, during my lunch break , checked the drivers footwell all looked as it should be, same for the passegers side which is where the heat slider can be seen moving the rods and bits.

Anyway it turned out my coolant had all but gone, bit worrying obviously, only checked all the levels about 2 weeks before....

But topped it, left the bongo running for 5 mins and the heaters were back working fine...

Thankyou for all the advice...

now I need to see where the possible leak is.?

Glad you've found the problem :D , I hope you're not driving it until you've found the leak [-X .
If it'd got low enough to affect the heater matrix, I'd worry you've introduced air into the system, how much did it take to top it up? 5 minutes isn't long enough to get it up to temp & pressure, I doubt the stat will have even opened by then.

And you know I'm going to say this, but fit a low coolant warning alarm. With one of those fitted, you could even decide to continue driving it (with spare 50/50 coolant miz on board in case) while you get round to addressing the problem properly. I have v. v. slight loss and am taking this approach.

Better to get it fixed properly though 8)

Draper -my advice to to you is to get the leak fixed and system bled before you drive your Bongo as per Kirsty. If you read the horror stories on here about overheating caused by leaks and airlocks then you wouldnt even consider driving your Bongo right now. You also might reconsider your maintenance checks as without a coolant alarm fitted you really should be checking your coolant level daily -two weeks ago just aint good enough !!!! Not intending to be rude -just trying to save you megabucks for a new head etc.

Cheers for the advice.
Will give my local bongo garage a call and see what they recommend. How easy is it to get a coolant alarm fitted?

Also how much would you expect to pay for them to find a blead as needed, find leak etc etc.

I know it will vary depending where it comes from but I'm never sure if I'm being ripped off. Every time I go to a garage it always seems to add up to £500....(maybe thats just memories of my VW van days...)

Many thanks again

Cheers

Coolant alarm takes an hour, tops. nothing too complex or scary, consider the Mason alarm too, makes the temp gauge do what it's supposed to & provides a settable alarm, dead easy to fit too. The coolant alarm only measures the level in the header tank, there are coolant issues that it will not detect - lots of (heated?) discussion on here about that as you may have seen , the Mason alarm only detects temperature increase, which may not react in some overheat situations. TM2, is a similar, stand alone unit that can be connected to oil pressure too. None of which replaces regular maintenance, replacement & checks
As to finding the leak, fixing, flushing & refilling it's hard to say, dependant on what it is. Hopefully it's just a hose on it's way, which you should be able to spot yourself, top candidates are the bleed hose under the passenger seat, big hose coming out of the top of the engine under drivers seat or smaller hose to the rear of the engine lower down over the starter motor going back to the heater matrix. you'll probably see a bit of "ballooning" & dried marks from the leak. Once identified give Flippa a pm & get a replacement silicon hose (if he's back from his hols), give all the hoses a bloody good check over even if you find an obvious leak, there may be more on their way if one's gone.
