Open the drivers door and check the wiring loom where it passes from the body to the door...the wires often break here.

I'd start by checking the wiring loom between the door & the car body for breaks/shorts, & check the switch is working, may need contacts cleaning.

Sounds like the switch/pad has either dirty contacts or has given up the ghost.

Anyone know if its easy to strip & clean this?

If pressing Left and Right doesn't work when you have the left/right mirror selector switch in either position then its a fair bet its the switch. Otherwise its a fair bet it's linked to the mirror or its wiring.

Knowing me, I've missed the point but that's my two pence worth anyway

Like mike says, i suspect the switch/pad, if the left/right operation doesn't work on BOTH mirrors?

I'd assume as the title is "Drivers wing mirror", it's just the one, although, as drummed into me by a particularly obnoxious chief engineer many years ago- "If you assume, it makes an ass out of you & me" , that brings back bad memories

To follow logic, both wing mirrors are "drivers wing" mirrors.

It doesn't say Drivers Side Mirror & the passenger side mirror is of no benefit to anyone else.

Easy to be confused there.
