Heater issue / temperature control gone

Post by creepyc » Wed Oct 29, 2008 10:47 am

Only since it’s gone cold I’ve noticed that I seem to have lost all heating control in my 1998 Bongo.
The fan is fine, Air con fine, all seems to work if you want Hot (32c) all OK if you want cold simply knock it down from 32c to 31c voila cold!

Any ideas where to start on this one welcomed.
Thanks

Sticky flaps?
You can't polish a turd - but you can roll it in glitter.

Cheers for the responses...

Sticky Flaps???

Where on earth might I find those?

I'll check drivers footwell later and see how that looks....any thing obvious to look for?

Thanks

are you just using the top vents? If you use that setting, you get a lot of "fresh air" mixed in with the warm. change it to face and feet, and see if you get some heat coming out. Thats how mine behaves. Cold from face only, hot from face and feet setting.

Ah, mine started doing that on Tuesday when it got really cold so I switched to face and feet. So I can assume that's perfectly normal?

I'm pretty sure no matter what setting (screen, feet etc) it was either very hot 32c or cold anything below 31.5c
I had the Bongo last winter and it did not seem to be an issue then so I'm sure it's a new problem

OK just checked out a few more things.....

No matter what setting (Windscreen- feet etc) the issue is the same.
Same again for the rear heater 32c is hot 31.5 is cold.

When changing the temprature from 32c to 31.5c you can here a motor make a noise somewhere around the passenger glove box.
Also the fan speed seems to change too when lowering the temprature.

Looked around the drivers footwell and could not see anything obvious or stuck.

Had a technician take a quick look, although not a Bongo expert he said it sounds like the noise is coming from the passenger footwell and this would indicate a heater resistor issue.
This sounds expensive!
I've seen other threads regarding changing brushes etc.... anyone know if this sounds like a good prognosis / anyone any tips how to proceed?

Sounds like gobbledegook to me! I didn't know there were any critical elements of a Bongo heating system in the passenger footwell, but then I'm not an expert. WIth luck the likes of BF member and converter Madmile may be able to comment, as he's constantly stripping (Bongos!) and most likely to know what it all means.

Good luck and don't panic - yet! 8)

Look in the factsheets for the one one fans & resistors, the resistor pack is under the bonnet, not in the drivers footwell, the noises in the fotwell will likely be the motors moving the actuators, see here - http://www.lushprojects.com/bongopartsmk2/ for the schematic diagrams which should show you where it all is. when you change between modes, stick your head under & see what the mechanisms are doing, see if anything untoward seems to be happening.
there are 2 sensors for the climate control, one on the front of the dash on the drivers side I think, & the little grill slats cut into the dash on the passenger side of the centre cubby hole, if either of these are covered, it'll cause the unit to get confused.

Ha Ha back again...Still got issues with this however I've managed to reverse the issue!

In the passenger footwell there's a black box with connectors on...it controls the air flow / heater flaps (unsure of the techie name...any help welcomed?)
Took this off...stripped it down, cleaned etc put back...must have put it back wrong as now 32C = Cold....31.5 and below = Hot

Great for now as it's winter....

Sounds like this is the root cause....anyone know where to source a new one...knowing it's name might help my quest too
