"FLOPPY" Wing Mirror

Post by haydn callow » Sun Oct 26, 2008 3:08 pm

On the way to Woodlands one of Bongo's Mirrors (drivers side) just flopped itself into the folded position. Now it is just floppy and there is no resistance at all.
Thr mirror glass is working fine but there is no sound of a motor trying to run when trying to fold the mirror.
I would have expected (if a wire was broken) for the mirror to still be engaged with some sort of cogs.
Any idea chaps and girls ?? And how do you get into the relevant motor ? I have had the door panel off but don't see anyway in. Does the outside bottom cover come off and if so ...How. ???
Thanks in advance.

The outer cover is removable. There is another screw underneath that holds the mirror in place. You have to be carefull when prising as it can break, well mine did.

My mirror was floppy and used mikes excellent pics on the subject to effect a repair.

One of the lower gears had a broken lug/pin that locates in the mirror housing. I drilled out the gear and used a nail to make a new lug/pin.

There are quite a few gears in there and I had to take out all of them as the broken gear was right at the bottom of the housing. As they say "Assembly is the reverse procedure"

I cannot find mikes pics now, and I did not take any my self when the mirror was apart. Next time when the other side breaks I will

I removed the mirror completly from the door, there are three screws that hole on the mirror, two on the inside and one on the out side. The outer screw is hidden by a plastic trim/cover.

I will do another search and try to find the pics.

Here they are

I prefered the photo with Valerie Singleton. I used to watch Blue Peter just because of her.

Right then....all in bits...thanks lads and lassies.
The "fold" motor is Kaput.. So !! where can I get one ? Only a small cheap motor...seems a pity to write off a whole mirror..

It's all the right dimensions excepy the mounting holes are 15mm apart instead of 12mm.
£21 is a lot if it won't do the job but do I risk it ??

Have you tried Farnell this looks similar but does have 12mm spaced fixings.
