by now,most of you will know i have a v6 petrol with a noisy,tappetty engine.it has been variously diagnosed as sticking hydraulic lifters to worn camshafts.i submitted an enquiry the other day to partfinder about a replacement engine,in case it ever needed one,and this is the reply that i got.........

1) Supply a fully remanufactured exchange engine for £1295.00 + vat.
2) Supply a secondhand engine with 44,000 miles (approx) for £1050.00 + vat

-Engine oil, oil filter & fitting gaskets, £85+vat
-Labour charge, £85+vat

does anyone think this is reasonable?if i went down that path then the bongo would still have cost me less than £5700 for an s reg with rear conversion.of course,i`d much prefer to find a local mechanic who could solve my problems for £400-£500 and keep this engine.

That can only be answered once you've tried to claim on the warranty.
I feel you best bet would be to try and get a matched pair of heads - a lot less work that swapping an engine - but - as Dandy says they must be matched on a Vee engine or the inlet manifolds might not fit into the Vee correctly, the exhaust manifolds should be less problematic as they fit each head separately.

Hmmmm - I'd be tempted to treat myself to a new engine and sell the other off as spares, or else have it as a bench restoration project. Even with the new engine cost you didn't do bad on price overall for the Bongo and the price quoted seems OK for a no hassle, guarenteed, fitted replacement (just make sure the guarantee is worth something though - any info on these guys reputation?)

I don't know the logistics of it all or if it is possible but i certainly would consider the possability of using another v6 maybe a mondeo st24, people put different engines in different cars all the time, ive seen mini's with crx engines, nova's with calibra turbo engines, porche engines in vw campers, the list is huge
the main engine wiring harness is essential as to would be ecu and prob everything else around the engine, transmission would prob be a headache infact the whole thing would prob be a pain, as i say don't really know so don't shoot me down in flames guys but that would be a serious line off enquirey for me
A pair of 2nd hand heads is the easy option tho
Infact i would prob just park it in me garage and wait for some heads to turn up

Personally, I would agree with Mike...It's exactly what I would have said, right down to rebuilding the old one as a spare. While you rebuild the old one yourself, you are also learning the V6's individual quirks, and how to maintain your new engine. regarding guarantees on new engines......probably not worth the paper it's written on, unless the seller has a bullet proof , gold- plated reputation with a personal recommendation from the Pope, but worth a wee risk at that price.

I would say for peace of mind its worth it and I would have them fit it.
If you get a local to fit it and things go wrong there can be the old argument that it wasn't fitted correctly against it was faulty.
If they supply and fit there is 1 point of call so a little less chance of problems occuring
You can also ask how much for your engine so they can remanufacture it and maybe knock a few hundred off
