Heater control again

Post by davylaa » Sat Oct 04, 2008 11:25 am

At the risk of becoming a nuisance I'm going to ask for more help on heater problem. As stated previously I bought a new fan resistor with no joy. I have just bought a new "slow blow" fuse, again no joy. Rear heater blower works on all 3 settings. Air con blower works on 1,2,3 but not setting 4. The front heater blower does'nt work on any of the 4 settings. Where is the heater fan that people keep mentioning? The only one I can see is the radiator fan.
Thanks again in anticipation.

While I was under the bonnet I noticed this connector.
If disconnected the heater fan does not work but the fans that come with for the aircon do.

now if you switch the aircon on the main radiator fan starts and that may be what you think is the Aircon fan.
if the heater fan is no siezed then maybe try disconnecting this connector and see if any electric is gettin that far, if yes then look at fan motor if no then work back.

Ameture advice I'm afraid but thats all I have :D

That's great Rob. The reason I could'nt see the fan on mine was there's a flap that was covering the access. Will continue now with trying to solve the problem. Thanks for your time. I owe you a beer.

yes forgot to say if you have the heater on recirculating it covers the fan with a flap.

Hi i have just registered to this forum and found the problem i have under your section, could you tell me if it was sorted as it is the same prob as mine, i took te fan out and connected it straight to the battery and it spins but won't turn on by the switch and does the same thing as you have described, was looking for the other part you changed but not sure where it is so any advice would be great, it's driving me mad :( Cheers. Hi Andy. Sorry I did'nt get back to you but just got back from weekend in France. Have'nt sorted it yet but will keep you informed of any progress. The other part you mean is the Fan Resistor. Take it out and check the 5 terminals are still in tact ie not sprung away from the copper plate. I tried to resolder mine but made a mess of it. Must have done some damage elsewhere as problem was still same when I put a new one in (£45). Next step is to check the brushes in fan motor if I feel confident enough. Good luck. Will keep you updated.

Davylaa.
Not sure if this will help but my bongos just came bk from dealers. One of the problems it went bk for was that the heater blowers in the front didnt work on 3 of the settings.
It was a lead off, inside the cab. Front, left of brake pedal below the console thingy.

As a footnote, when reffering to the heater fan as being seized, i was suprised to discover that a "seized" fan needed only a small effort with my finger to free it up again, it must have been too much resistance for the (ahem) resistor too handle though, and subsequently burnt out. #-o

mine is all up and running again, had to re solder the resistor as 2 of the pins had popped off, hope you all get yours sorted, just make sure the fan spins free before connecting the fan again as it will just pop the resistor again, and check the 0 amp fuse next to the fan housing under the bonnet, if your not sure if its blown there is another 30 amp which you can swap over to check it, oh and if you have a piece of electrical cable about 3 ft long so you can connect the fan straight to bat to see if it spins that should count that out, can be a bit of a pain to get fan out if big hands like me but it took about 30 mins to take out, clean and a spray of wd40 then put it back so not a major problem, i can see out my front window again now   good luck guys with yours and if i can be of help just ask, Thanks for all ya help...
