Damaged cylinder head

Post by Exiled » Mon Oct 06, 2008 9:58 pm

I'm afraid my Bongo has reached a watershed in its life. It had an overheating problem and was spewing water vapour out of the exhaust, so I took it to a garage to have it looked at. They took the head off and sent it away, along with the rad, for testing. Apparently both need replacing at a cost to me of some £1700+

I wondered if anyone out there could tell me if they thought this price was even realistically ballpark for a job like this. I also wondered if it was possible/advisable to get a 2nd hand/reconditioned engine instead of the new head. The cost of the new head and head set is going to be around £900+ on its own. :-({|=

Any suggestions or advice would be warmly welcomed.

you can get a new head off ebay from around £200 up to £400, you can get a second hand recon engine for around £850 again off ebay, also a new rad is aboutt £140 on ebay so its up to you, £1700 just for a new head and rad is a little steep in my oppinion

It may be worthwhile phoning Wheel Quick in Wigan 01942 217800 and speak to Mike to see what would be the best option to take. Wheel Quick is highly recommended for their service on this site. :)

Did they give you an explanation of what caused the overheating? Was the rad blocked? The worst case scenario would be to have it rebuilt & for the new one to go the same way. I'd be tempted to go for a replacement engine with a warranty from a reputable supplier. When I was looking into this a while abck, this was definitely the most cost effective option.

That's not bad is it? - it's even got all the ancillaries like turbo, alternator etc.

 You can easily pay around that price for the turbo and alternator alone.
