Afternoon Bongonaughts,
We have a problem with, we assume, our starter motor. When we try and turn the engine over the starter motor seems to let out a high pitched whine and doesn't turn the engine over, (2.5 diesel). It seems like the starter isn't engaging with the engine if that makes sense.
Whilst the engine hasn't been fired up for a couple of weeks the battery seems good and we're waiting until the glow plug light goes off. Having read a few of the starter motor threads I think we've got the cold weather type starter.
Anyone got any ideas or advice.
Cheers

Re: Starter Motor Problem?
If you've got twin batteries, and a switch with a picture of an engine to the right of the steering wheel, you've got the winter set-up, with a heavier duty starter motor.
The usual problem is the contacts in the motor which are easily replaced, but I'm not sure if they're available for the heavy duty starter. Hopefully somebody who knows will be along shortly.

Our van has a mid convert and hence a leisure battery installed where the old battery came from. Yes we have the switch with the picture of an engine.

Have a look at this thread http://www.igmaynard.co.uk/bongo/forum/ ... ts#p227526 - it may be worth giving the firm in Southampton a call.

I would also recommend AUTO ELECTRICAL SUPPLIES (SOUTHAMPTON) LTD, but try this number instead..... 02380211988
as the one listed in http://www.igmaynard.co.uk/bongo/forum/ ... ts#p227526 is a fax number now.
All the best.

Re: Starter Motor Problem?
The "Winter pack" starter is 2.2 kW and the solenoid contacts are almost impossible to replace, I found it
impossible to source the complete solenoid.
The standard starter motor is 2.0 kW and is a direct replacement for the heavy duty starter. I replaced the
"Winter pack" starter with a "Standard" starter and have had no problems since. The solenoid is in a different
position on the standard starter and may appear not to fit, but I can assure you it does.
