AFT Roof - Water Seeping Through to Cab

Hi guys, we have just got back from our first camping trip since we got our Bongo on the fifth night it rained overnight. in the morning when we put the roof down to continue our journey we niticed the there was a watermark above both the drivers and passengers doors on the headliners.

I inspected the roof when we set up camp for the night there was a little dampness on the inside of the upper tent area but i put this down to the zips letting some water in, but the only place i could see water pentrating the cab was on the frame for the upper tent. It has a small foam seal on the outside which was very wet and when i pressed the frame on the inside of the tent a small amount of water came from underneath. I assume that the water passes through the holding down screw holes and geets into the cab this way.

Any ideas on how to cure this, I was thinking of getting waterproofing agent for the upper tent and using a sealant all the way round the frame inside and out to prevent water ingress.

Any advice guys.

There could be a number of solutions here but, in the short term anyway, you're idea to stuff as much preventitive gear into the likely areas as soon as poss is a good 'un.

At least any more damage could be minimised.

You don't need waterproofing agent for the tent - the outside is plastic coated. Moisture on the inside of the tent is usually condensation, especially if somebody has slept up there, but it may seep through a zip.
I'm pretty sure that somebody else has used sealant around the outside of the frame.

the patches on the roof tent were at two specific areas both at the seams, as we were parked directely into the driving rain i assumed that the wind blowing the rain into the tent.

I had a damp patch above the drivers door on one occasion, but the roof hadn't been up at the time. Thought that it had been getting under the roof seal while driving, but on inspection I couldn't see any way for the water to get into the headlining from the AFT. I have wind deflectors on the doors & had been driving in heavy rain with the drivers windo slightly open. The seal between the deflector & the door lets water through & I came to the conclusion that water was getting down through the seal & then being drawn through the top of the open window by airflow & wicked into the headlining. I've kept the window closed since in rain & haven't had a repetition of the problem. I don't know if this could account for your leak?

I think Dreamwarrior (Mike) did something about sealing his roof tent to prevent problems. There was debate on here recently about whether tents leaked much. I've not had this problem but then I've not had a night of driving rain as far as I can recall. I think parking facing into driving rain would probably push the limit on the roof tent unless it is in perfect nick. Mine is separating a little at one top corner and driving rain would come through I'm sure. I think if you were determined, you could probably set about making the tent pretty much watertight (thought daresay zips may still weep a bit in driving rain). The material itself SHOULD be watertight.

But the most obvious thing is defo. to anticipate weather and conditions and park with tail to the wind and in a sheltered spot where possible.

They say we learn more in life from what we get wrong than what we get right. In no time at all you'll be experienced Bongocampers, able to advise others on how to get things right. it was like that with me (still is, there's shedloads I don't know compared to experienced campers)
