If the air is taken in somewhere where it remains trapped, then the effects on the cooling system are unpredictable. You might get cavitation and loss of efficiency in the water pump due to air being present in that area. You may get hot spots in the engine. Who knows.

Pipe fom head to turbo is getting messy rather quickly.

Sorry - misleading photo. My bleed pipe's fine but the hose below it is the one that runs to the turbo. Thats the one that is exuding the green gunge at both ends.

If its not badly corroded,dont worry about it,just clean it and smear it with (petroleum jelly)
The hose that is in the topic is the bleed hose.

In the case of a hole in the bleed pipe:

When the water gets to boiling point, it expands & pushes water out the hole. When it cools down, there will be less volume of water in the system so there is a larger air gap available. The pressure inside the system will drop below atmospheric pressure so air will be forced into the hole. When the pressures inside & outside equalise, there will be no vacuum left & that point your statement will be correct.

If you drink water from a plastic drinks bottle, the container will contract as the liquid is sucked out. Whem you take it away from your mouth, the air rushes in to fill the space where the liquid was.

Lets look at the case of a hole in the bleed pipe. Water expands at boiling point? It expands above and below 3.98c.
So as the temp rises coolant will be lost from the hole agreed. As the system cools there isnt a larger air gap available, there is a hole that allows the coolant to contract. As the system is open to atmospheric pressure due to the hole (it is like running with the pressure cap off) you will not pressurise or create a vacuum in the system.

As for the drinks bottle your not actually sucking it out, you are creating negative pressure, atmospheric pressure depresses the container. Try sucking it out of a bottle of Stella.

If I have only lost a small amount of coolant and I have, about 1/2 a cup. The system is still working correctly.

All the hoses are hot as is the rear heater.
The coolant hasn't dropped below the level in the tank and let any air in.
The mason controled temp gauge still reads as It always has.

Is there a procedure that I can do that will completely purge any air with out changing all the coolant. I am worried about going the whole hog so to speak as I may do more damage than good.

I think (but others with more expertise please comment) that you should proceed as per a normal bleed only no need to drain any coolant. Have some 50/50 mix ready to top up the header tank but you won't need much as you should (almost?) immediately have pure coolant (no air) coming out the bleed pipe so can put the bung in and job done. The other thing you could do to minimise any air issues is (sounds daft but) is to fill the new bleed pipe with water (505/50 won't matter for this tiny amount) and put the bung in so the water stays in the pipe (with the help of a finger over the end until you push the new bleed pipe over the metal pipe stub pipe). Hard to imagine much air is gong to get in but probably best to play safe etc.

Sorry if I just stated the obvious, but better twice than not at all.

I only use the Bongo at weekends and only noticed the leak when fitting a cruise control (thanks Simon) unit.

I noticed some liquid (not nasty and brown as a service was done a few monthe ago) seeping from a small split near the hose clip.

As I mentioned before the tank is well topped up and I put in a bit for luck before driving to Asda to get some beer

Excellent advice

An airlock is a device which permits the passage of people and objects between a pressure vessel and its surroundings while minimizing the change of pressure in the vessel and loss of air from it. The lock consists of a small chamber with two airtight doors in series which do not open simultaneously
