pump seals - what do I ask for at a motor factor ?

Post by smitch » Sun Sep 14, 2008 10:56 am

Hi
Had a go at the pump seals last night using Dandywarhole's post. Great how to write up, but no definition of what size/spec of new seals to buy.

I noticed a few drips from the pump last week while I was poking around trying to work out why Freda stutters at idle after a while when running on SVO. I got the domed cap off, bit fiddly but OK the seal is badly set with significant flats (I'm guessing it should be a plain o ring), unfortunately I didn't have one the same size in by stock of bits and bobs so I had to refit the old one with a VERY thin wipe of hylomar. I didn't try the more difficult blanking plate (That's actually where the leak is coming from). Can someone identify what seals I should ask for at my local motor factor ? and are they both the same ?

Thanks
smitch

When I got mine earlier this year from a diesel specialist I asked for bongo fuel fump seals...he looked at me blank....when I asked for ford Ranger seals he gave a big smile and went straight to a big box of them....'always going' he said.

Perfect fit.

Dandywarhol had a good source that will post them. Check old threads or PM him. I bought some and then did my back in trying (and failing) to do the job. I have the greatest respect for those who've managed this job. Small hands and a back that can take bending over for some time are essential prerequisites

Thanks for all the useful input guys. I've ordered a pair of seals from lawson diesel - friendly and helpful. I'll look forward to a good knuckle bashing at the weekend.

Fitted the seals today (during lunch time in the works car park, much easier in good daylight than in the dark) about 20 minutes start to finish, easy job ! Removing the two 10mm hex bolts on the difficult to access blanking plate is easy using a flat ratched spanner. Sets are available for about £30 at motor factors but I got just one for 10mm at B&Q of all places for £3.50. Fingers crossed for no more leaks or stuttering at idle. cheers :P
